TRIBULATIONS

Spurred by the rapid disappearance of the world's indigenous peoples and their oral traditions, Phil Borges abandoned his dentistry practice to pursue his first love, photography. For the past 25 years, he has traveled to the farthest reaches of the globe to meet with persecuted Tibetan monks engaged in nonviolent struggle and embattled tribespeople of the Ecuadorian Amazon who must defend their way of life by any means necessary. Through interviews and portraiture, Borges documents his subjects and their tribulations with dignity, and conveys their rarely heard stories.

CHARCOAL PHOTOGRAPHS

Dirk Dzimirsky’s works are quite amazing. Dzimirsky’s works are in many private collections around the world, including USA, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. Most of Dzimirsky’s works are in pencil or charcoal on paper, with added highlights in white.

CHILDISH CREEP

I came across this photographer Anna Hurtig on Onexposure, and I really loved her creepy/moody child portraits. Too many photographs of children are cutesy and boring, so I like seeing a photographer be a little more creative with their subject matter.

UNREAL FILM STILL

Born in Shanghai, Yijun Liao obtained an MFA in Memphis and now resides in Brooklyn. Her latest series, Stills from Unseen Films, is a tribute to films that she has not seen. She pretends that the images are from real films, characters lost in thought and acting in roles that exist only in her mind.

DROPPED

David Levine is an artist by way of acting, he has a degree in intellectual history, English literature, and directing, but it's hard to feel comfortable characterizing him as anything else. Born and bred in London, David never had any other ambition than to pursue his passion in photography. He describes his parents as neither ‘encouraging nor discouraging' but it didn't really matter as his mind was set and no-one could have stopped him from going after his dream.

MIRROR OF SELF-EXPRESSION

In 1966, Eikoh Hosoe was introduced by his sister-in-law, the photographer Hisae Imai. His approach to photography is philosophical, "… To me photography can be simultaneously both a record and a mirror or window of self-expression… The camera is generally assumed to be unable to depict that which is not visible to the eye and yet, the photographer who wields it well can depict what lies unseen in his memory." Renowned Japanese author, Yukio Mishima wrote of Hosoe’s photographs, “God is dead, and naked human beings face the world shameless and without pride.”
